Tasmania's Heritage

Index to census records 1837 - 1857

Censuses were undertaken in Tasmania in 1837, 1838, 1842, 1843, 1848, 1851, and 1857. Most of the individual returns (the forms recording details of each household) have not survived. Those which have survived are listed here. These returns have been indexed by the name of the head of the household. Note that returns for many areas are incomplete, and the information recorded varies from year to year.

The main set of returns includes the name of the householder, name of employer of servants, name of person in charge, place of residence, the name of the head of the house or establishment, its proprietor, whether the house was built of stone, brick, or of wood, whether it was complete or unfinished, whether it was inhabited or not when the proprietor was present, number of persons generally residing there and the number of these persons who were free. The return also contains a statistical form showing the age (within ranges), sex, religion, occupation, civil condition and trade or calling of the persons residing in the house. These appear in the index with a 'CEN1' reference.

CENSUS RETURNS FROM SERIES CEN1 HAVE BEEN DIGITISED AND ARE NOW AVAILABLE ONLINE. To view a digitised record, search the index by name and then click on the 'page' link in the 'search results' screen. Only series CEN1 has been digitised.

The documents have been digitised from microfilm. In some cases, the age, shades of colour and quality of ink make the documents difficult to read, even in their original form. Please notify the Tasmanian Archive and Heritage Office about images which are difficult to read for these reasons. We will endeavour to replace them with enhanced copies if the request is legitimate and if a better copy can be achieved.

You may make copies of these digitised records for private research and study. If you want to use them in any other way you must seek permission from the Tasmanian Archive and Heritage Office. Contact us.
